How to Compost in the Kitchen (Without the Smell)

Going green has never been easier—or more stylish. More and more Kiwi households are turning to composting as a way to reduce waste and nourish their gardens, and we’re totally here for it.

Going green has never been easier—or more stylish. More and more Kiwi households are turning to composting as a way to reduce waste and nourish their gardens, and we’re totally here for it. And no, you don’t need a massive backyard or a nose of steel. There are plenty of neat ways to compost right inside your kitchen—without it becoming a pongy mess.
‍

Why Compost?

It’s not just good for your veggie patch—it’s good for the planet. Over 120,000 tonnes of food waste ends up in New Zealand landfills every year. That waste releases methane (a nasty greenhouse gas), but when composted properly, it creates nutrient-rich fertiliser instead. Win-win!
‍

What Can You Compost?

✅ Fruit & veggie scraps

✅ Coffee grounds & tea bags

✅ Eggshells and cartons

✅ Hair (yep, even the dog's!)

✅ Paper (as long as it’s not coated in plastic)

🚫 Meat, dairy, greasy food, plastic, glass, or metal. If in doubt, leave it out—unless you’re using a Bokashi system (more on that below).

Indoor-Friendly Composting Solutions
‍

Vermiculture (a.k.a worm farms)

If you don’t mind a few wriggly friends, worm farms are compact, odourless, and fit neatly into a cupboard. They’re great for food scraps and perfect for apartments.
‍

Bokashi Buckets

A Bokashi system uses fermentation to break down food—including meat and dairy. It’s fast and low-maintenance, but it can get a bit smelly if not looked after properly.
